Back in 1970, during the Vietnam War, Ray Auler brought four female exotic dancers from Chicago to live in a Saigon villa and perform for GIs in an adjacent nightclub called The Office. The book begins as the four ladies walk out of the villa and head for the American Embassy. There they tell sordid tales of imprisonment and forced prostitution that ultimately lead to the Chicago indictment and prosecution of Ray and his friend, Craig Poulter, for violations of the Mann Act transporting and imprisoning the four women “for prostitution, debauchery and other immoral purposes.” The book’s author, Barry Freeman, becomes Auler’s Chicago defense attorney. The story unfolds in Wisconsin, Saigon, and Chicago, against a backdrop of the in-play turmoil of the Vietnam protests and sexual revolution. It is humorous, thought provoking, and entertaining for all readers, awakens memories of the Vietnam and Watergate eras for those who were around at the time, and educates and stimulates those who were not. Throughout And Other Immoral Purposes, the reader is provided with insights, observations, and philosophical musings, gained from the author’s forty-seven years of experience litigating criminal and civil cases.

This is a great fun read. Freeman tells a wacky tale about a case in which he himself defended a small time entertainment producer from the midwest who imports an unwholesome quartet of ladies of the night to Viet Nam to entertain our servicemen in the middle of a war. Freeman may never have been paid for his services but was able to spin a terrific year all these years later. His descriptions of a bizarre cast of characters including his client and particularly his unworldly young gofer are hilarious. I was reminded of the writing style of the great Elmore Leonard.Tom Harris

And Other Immoral Purposes Barry J Freeman 9781503197596 Books Reviews
This is an amazing debut effort from the author about a fascinating chapter in American history. The fact that it's a true story makes it all the more interesting. I can't wait for the movie.
Outstanding excellent read. Enjoyed the story and the writing.
This is an excellent book telling a fascinating story. It is written in a very personal way that brings the reader right into the action. I enjoyed reading it very much. I strongly recommend it.
This book was fantastic! I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Fascinating story, and very well-written too.
Extremely well written, fast paced and held my interest. Hard to put down, loved the author's writing style! The story had great detail and description.
I fell asleep reading last night, awoke about an hour ago and finished the book. It's Five Stars and nothing less. I've never read a book that answered my questions about how the trial system really works. It was easy to follow, and [the author's] talent for the visuals and for clearly explaining what I think is a complex set of circumstances, made this a compelling read.
The author brings to life the times and events of a very turbulent time. His description of circumstances brought to light first hand accounts that captured the imagination, and more importantly understanding of the legal process and consequences. He engages the reader in 'feeling' the impacts of the trial outcomes, and then gives clarity to honesty within the appeals process. He brought to light the misuse of prosecutorial discretion, and more importantly those prosecutors not honestly striving for justice but choosing to win at all costs! I read the book in two days because it captured my attention page after page. An exceptional read and I recommend to all who want quality story telling in a conversational manner. Can't wait for the next Barry Freeman book!
